YOUR iPhone is braced to receive a new Apple feature that will improve its battery life and here’s how.
Apple’s iPhone series runs iOS, the firm’s own operating system that has been around for over a decade.

Since its debut, Apple has consistently breathed new life into the software with new, numbered, updates that debut annually.

The latest version of iOS, 13, is expected to launch in September - the forthcoming iteration of the operating system was unveiled at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June.

iOS 13 has a number of headline features such as a dark mode, improved native apps and performance enhancements that will surely be appreciated by the Apple faithful.

However, the software also brings a number of more nuanced alterations to the table that are equally as important.

Of these, the most poignant is what Apple calls “optimised battery charging” that has been specifically engineered to slow the rate of battery ageing on iPhones.

iPhones use a type of battery called lithium-ion that is designed to charge quickly to reach 80 percent of its capacity.

After the majority of the battery has been powered up, a feature Apple dubs “slower trickle charging” will then take over - this is designed to ease the electrical current to a particular device to extend its cell lifespan overall.

While Apple’s current process has been engineered with battery longevity in mind, leaving an iPhone fully charged can still degrade its cell lifespan.

However, iOS 13’s “optimised battery charging” feature attempts to harness on-device machine learning to understand a user’s daily charging routine so it can activate its trickle system closer to when the user is actually going to use their device.

If an individual puts their phone on charge at 10am every night and unplugs it at 7am in the morning, Apple's device will understand this and adjust its methods accordingly.

This, in theory, means the iPhone’s battery should spend less time at a full charge, thereby increasing its life.

Discussing the new feature in iOS 13, Apple said: “A new option helps slow the rate of battery ageing by reducing the time your iPhone spends fully charged.

“iPhone uses on-device machine learning to understand your daily charging routine so it can wait to finish charging beyond 80 per cent until you need to use it.”

The fresh functionality will surely be greatly appreciated by Apple fans that, according to numerous sets of data, are keeping their handsets for longer overall.

While iOS 13 is still in beta, the full version of the new operating system is presumed to release in September - the month in which every software iteration since iOS 6 has launched in.
