Gmail vs Outlook: Microsoft is catching up to Google with this new feature

GMAIL and Outlook are two of the most popular email clients on the planet and each offer a commendable array of features for users. However, Microsoft has recently updated its programme to catch it up to Google’s offering and here is what’s new.

Gmail is the newer of the two email programmes but is considered to be more popular than Microsoft’s offering.

Google has continuously updated Gmail since its release back in 2004 to introduce new functionality and improvements for users.

In particular, Google has been keen to implement machine learning into Gmail to make it smarter.

Back in 2017 the company released a feature dubbed Smart Reply that provided quick responses to emails based on context.

When a user attempts to reply to an email, the app will present possible replies that, if pressed, can instantly be sent.

While the function is great for desktops, it feels most at home on smartphones.

Microsoft’s Outlook can also deliver suggested responses for users, but until now such functionally had been limited to its computer client.

However, the Redmond-based tech giant is finally bringing quick replies to smartphones.

The Outlook app on the Google Play Store was recently updated to introduce the functionality.

Discussing the new function, Microsoft said: “Give those tired thumbs a rest! You can tap a suggestion to jump-start your reply for some emails.

“Don’t worry, you’ll have the chance to edit your response before it’s sent.

“All of our weekly updates also include performance improvements and bug fixes to make Outlook better for you.”

Once you have obtained the new app version, you can enable the feature by heading to your Outlook account settings and ensuring the “suggested replies” toggle is switched on.

It is currently unclear when the fresh tool will arrive for iOS users.
