Galaxy Watch and Gear S3 update: Samsung's next wearable may fail to beat the Apple Watch

GALAXY Watch and the Gear S3 are expected to be succeeded next month by a new wearable from Samsung. While the forthcoming hardware has been rumoured to boast a swathe of new features, it appears it may still fail to beat the Apple Watch Series 4, at least when it launches.

Galaxy Watch and the Gear S3 remain incredibly appealing wearable options from Samsung - the former was unveiled last year while the latter debuted back in 2016.

However, back in May the South Korean tech giant was rumoured to be hard at work on a new fully-fledged smartwatch.

SamMobile was the first to make such a claim and has since showed alleged images of the product in the wild.

The supposed hardware was shown looking incredibly similar to the current Galaxy Watch Active but had navigation buttons on its side that were different in shape.

Evan Blass recently corroborated the design of the Galaxy Watch Active 2 with what appeared to be a leaked promotional image of the device.

The wearable was shown in a rose gold case and had a similarly coloured strap.

Wareable has since issued a report discussing even more details about the device.

The publication, citing sources familiar with Samsung’s plans, declared the Galaxy Watch Active 2 will launch in a total of three models: one with Wi-Fi, another with Wi-Fi and LTE in addition to a third that bears Under Armour branding.

The third variant was said not to have LTE functionality.

Wareable noted the Galaxy Watch Active 2 will be made available in either a 40 millimetre or 44 millimetre case size.

It was claimed the new wearable will be capable of performing an electrocardiogram (ECG) for users, similar to what is already offered by the Apple Watch Series 4.

However, the publication declared Samsung is “still waiting on FDA approval” for the functionality and therefore will not receive it until “some time in the first half of 2020”.

Such a wait time means the Galaxy Watch Active may fail to beat the Apple Watch Series 4, at least at launch.

Wareable stated Samsung’s new product will be able to alert users if their heart rate spikes too high or too low from the outset, though.

Samsung was said to see the Galaxy Watch Active 2 as “halfway between the Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Watch Active”.

Other features the device is reported to have include: sleep tracking, on-device coaching, Samsung Health, Bixby and Samsung Pay.

It was noted the hardware will work with both Android and iOS smartphones.

Finally, the outlet insisted Samsung will reveal the Galaxy Watch Active 2 alongside its new Galaxy Note 10 flagship on August 7.
